Westwood to go round again

Warrington Wolves have confirmed that hugely experienced forward Ben Westwood has signed a new one-year deal with the club, ensuring he will play in his eighteenth Super League campaign in 2019.

The 37-year-old has been with the Wolves since 2002 after joining from Wakefield and will continue as the oldest player still playing in the top-flight – an accolade he and Jamie Jones-Buchanan light heartedly compete for. The 26 time England international has pulled on the primrose and amber jersey 436 times and, in 2018, was part of the team which reached both showpiece finals albeit falling agonisingly short, losing to Catalans and Wigan in the Challenge Cup and Super League finals respectively.

After penning his new deal, Westwood said he was delighted to be continuing his career. “I really enjoyed last year,” he told the media. Despite his advancing years, the Normanton-born forward explained his hope that he can help the club’s youngsters develop while taking to the field himself. “I’m still aiming to play as many games as I can going into next year. I’ve been here a long time and experience counts for everything so hopefully I can pass some of that on to the younger guys and play a part in them stepping up,” he said.

A huge rugby league fan, Joe is from York and has followed both the Knights and Leeds Rhinos. The down to earth nature of the sport and it's players diverted his attention away from football and, now, is pursuing a writing career in the greatest sport in the world.

Get 'em Onside is that vessel. Since starting in October 2017, the site has accrued in excess of 400,000 views, nearing a million impressions and almost a thousand followers on the facebook, twitter and instagram platforms. Not bad for something that was only started to kill a bit of time!
