Anthony Thackeray has signed a deal with Sheffield Eagles, moving to the Steel City from Featherstone after three years with Rovers.
32-year-old Thackeray has joined fellow former Featherstone man Brad Knowles in joining Mark Aston’s off-season overhaul ahead of 2019. After scoring eighteen tries in what was a challenging campaign for the LD Nutrition Stadium club, the experienced Thackeray will bring creativity and a scoring threat to the Eagles’ halves for 2019. After seeing the former Hull FC, Castleford, Widnes, York, Halifax and Dewsbury half-back sign a two-year-deal with Sheffield, Aston told the media that he believes his new signing will be a big hit in South Yorkshire. “He scores tries, has a great short kicking game and I have been impressed with him defensively over the last 12 months,” he explained, adding that “we need to start progressing up the ladder and with players like Thackeray, he is going to help us to get where we want to be.”
Thackeray’s departure is the latest from Featherstone who, after missing out on a place in The Qualifiers in 2018, have had to cut costs accordingly. Last week saw centre Misi Taulapapa head north to Newcastle for 2018.
