Rowley leaves Wolfpack – McDermott incoming?

Toronto Wolfpack have confirmed this evening that head coach Paul Rowley has departed the club with an official statement saying that a mutual agreement was reached.

In his first season in charge of the Canadian team, they were promoted from Betfred League One into the Championship and, after topping the table in the regular season in 2018, they reached the Million Pound Game. However, while heavily favoured to triumph over London in the match – which was held at Toronto’s Lamport Stadium – they fell short in a 4-2 defeat and, with it, missed out on promotion. That will no doubt have hindered Rowley’s cause to stay at the club and, after suffering that disappointment, the former Leigh Centurions coach has seen his time with the Wolfpack come to an end.

Former Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott – Super League’s most successful coach – has been linked to the job ever since he left the West Yorkshire giants and is now heavy favourite to take the hotseat as the Canadians seek to reach the top flight at the second time of asking. His former role as the head coach of the USA international team give McDermott a link to North American rugby league but, should he not – for whatever reason – be Rowley’s successor, Toronto’s director of rugby Brian Noble is another option available to the club, himself a very successful coach.
