Following the confirmation that Wayne Bennett is heading to South Sydney while Anthony Seibold is expected to move the opposite way to Brisbane, the NRL coaching merry-go-round seems to have whirred into action after New Zealand head coach Michael Maguire has reportedly agreed to take the top job at Wests Tigers.

The former Wigan Warriors and Rabbitohs head coach only took the Kiwi reins in May but it is believed that he will leave the job following the culmination of the upcoming three test series against England. Having won Super League’s Grand Final and the NRL equivalent in 2010 and 2014 respectively, Wests – who finished  9th and outside of the play-offs in 2018 – will be pleased to have brought in a coach with such a strong track record.

Maguire’s arrival at the club paves the way for Ivan Cleary – head coach at the Tigers for the last two seasons – to return to Penrith Panthers, a team he coached in over a hundred NRL matches before moving to Wests. Indeed, Cleary will be coaching his son, Nathan, at the Panthers and will be hoping to build on a 2018 campaign where the team finished 6th in the NRL, the team having been knocked out of the play-offs in the second round, losing 21-21 to Cronulla. Ivan will be taking over from caretaker coach Cameron Ciraldo at the Panthers.
