It has today been confirmed that St Helens’ long serving forward Jon Wilkin will leave the club at the end of the current season.

With over 400 club appearances – the majority with the Lancastrians – to his name, 34-year-old Wilkin started his career with Hull KR before moving west during the summer of 2002. Throughout his career, he has been regarded as one of the best ball-playing forwards in Super League and was recognised by being named in the 2006 Dream Team, the same year he scored two tries in the Challenge Cup final at Twickenham.

In the same year, he made his international debut for Great Britain, appearing off the bench in Sydney as Great Britain beat Australia 23-12 in the final Tri-Nations competition with the home nations competing as one. In total, Wilkin made six appearances for Great Britain and ten for England, scoring one try for the latter.

A former captain of Saints, the club legend is not believed to be retiring and is likely to play on in 2019 – that, however, will not be in the famous ‘red vee’.
