Hometown Clare extends Cas stay

Castleford Tigers have today announced that winger James Clare has penned a new deal which will keep him at his hometown club until at least the end of the 2020 campaign.

Having come through the club’s academy, 27-year-old Clare made his Tigers debut against Huddersfield in 2012 and has made in excess of forty appearances for the club in two spells. After an impressive spell with Bradford which saw him have a prolific 2016 season, he joined Leigh Centurions for their Super League return in 2017, only for an ACL injury to strike in pre-season to rule him out for the majority of the campaign. Nevertheless, his prowess as a try scorer remained and crossed six times in five games for the Lancashire club at the end of the season. That feat didn’t stop the club dropping out of the top flight but Clare was offered the chance to return to his hometown club on an initial twelve-month deal.

The offer of a new deal clearly indicates that Tigers’ head coach Daryl Powell has been impressed with ‘Sticks’. “James has done a great job since he has come back from injury. He started the season pretty well but has gone to another level in his last two performances and I’m confident he will continue to improve and play his best rugby over the next two years and afterwards,” he explained to the club website, delighted that the winger has put pen to paper.

As you would expect, Clare himself was ecstatic to have extended his stay at Wheldon Road. “I’m extremely happy to sign this new deal with Castleford,” he professed. “Growing up it was my dream to play for the Tigers and to have played this long already for them is great, then to add another two years on top of that… I’m in heaven!”

“When I left the club a couple of years ago, I always wanted to come back but since leaving the club I’ve not only learnt a lot as a player but as a person and since I’ve come back I feel like I’ve been ready for the challenge and better for the club.”
