Widnes Vikings have today confirmed their acquisition of former Wigan Warriors centre Anthony Gelling on a two-year-deal from next season.
Having departed the Warriors at the end of the 2017 season – a team with whom he won a Super League Grand Final the previous season – the 27-year-old has made a handful of appearances this season for the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL. His exit from Wigan came following his desire to return to his homeland to be closer to his family after his girlfriend was involved in a car accident. When he left, it was suggested that the Warriors would have first refusal on the six-time Cook Islands international and his future move to Widnes indicates that Wigan didn’t take up that option.
The news will no doubt please Vikings fans, many of whom were deeply frustrated by the lack of investment in the playing squad over recent years. It seems that the club are set for another stint in The Qualifiers when the divisions split in the coming weeks and the club will be hoping that, having dispensed of Denis Betts’ services at the end of May, a feel good factor following his departure and this hugely positive signing will inspire the club to maintain their Super League status for 2019.
