The arrival of May opens doors for clubs and players

Today signals the first day that rugby league players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the 2018 campaign and, as such, speculation and rumours will be rife to kick off in a big way now May has arrived.

The likes of Ryan Hall, Albert Kelly and, of course, Zak Hardaker are three of the highest profile players who are currently available to sign contracts for the start of the 2019 Super League season. Hall, however, is certainly still a top quality winger who one can only assume will be offered extended terms with the Rhinos while Hardaker is strongly rumoured to be a likely Wigan Warriors signing.

It has previously been suggested that current Warriors full back Sam Tomkins could join Catalans at the end of this season and, throughout April, it was written that the final year of a four year contract he signed on his return to the club is actually an option in the club’s favour, one it is believed Wigan had until the end of April to exercise it. Another player, however, who the DW Stadium club will be wanting to tie down if at all possible is 21 year old centre Oliver Gildart. Super League’s 2017 Young Player of the Year has been linked with NRL club Wests Tigers as well as local rivals St Helens but surely Shaun Wane and Kris Radlinski will be keen to sign him onto a long term contract?

Castleford’s hooker-cum-loose forward Adam Milner is also a player who, unlike many of his Tigers teammates, is yet to put pen to paper with the Wheldon Road club. The likes of Paul McShane, Greg Eden and Jesse Sene-Lefao – among others – have signed extended deals to keep them with the 2017 League Leaders’ Shield winners but 26 year old Milner is supposedly attracting NRL interest and, if that fails to materialise, other Super League clubs will surely be keen to sign the man who is now approaching 200 Tigers appearances.

There are, of course, many other players whose contracts are up for renewal and developments will no doubt occur over the coming weeks, as will the release of news regarding new deals for players.

Get ’em Onside will strive to bring you as much of the contract news as possible!
