After a strong start to their season, St Helens’ coach Justin Holbrook seems to be a huge fan of Danny Richardson’s. Initially brought in last year to begin his Saints career, his dynamic style and creativity have seen many fans dub his the new Sean Long. Such has been his success, his vastly experienced peer Matty Smith has yet to feature for the Langtree Park club – and he may now be on his way out.
A couple of weeks ago rumours began circling that Smith would be heading out on loan with Hull KR – still looking for a half back – and Catalans strongly linked with the former Wigan Warrior. After a positively appalling start to the campaign saw them battered 26-0 at home last night against Warrington with only the weather stopping the scoreline being more embarassing, the latter may well be his next destination. Luke Walsh and off season recruit Samisoni Langi are both out injured indefinitely and that has left the inexperienced Lucas Albert in the halves alongside Greg Bird – playing out of position such is their lack of playmakers.
It may well be that over the Easter period he will get a run out due to the short turnaround from the club’s Good Friday derby against Wigan to their Easter Monday trip to Widnes but Justin Holbrook will find that he can’t keep the 30 year old on the sidelines without playing any rugby for much longer.
