Ones to watch: Danny Richardson

An injury to senior scrum half Matty Smith saw an opening present itself for St Helens’ 21 year old Danny Richardson in June and the young half staked a claim for a bigger role for the Super League team.

While he doesn’t boast Smith’s top quality kicking game, Richardson has dynamism and pace that his more experienced colleague could only dream of, making him an infinitely more dangerous line runner for The Saints. Many members of the St Helens’ faithful were calling for him to play a much larger part in their Super 8s campaign than he did and, if he had, he may have provided the injection of pace that could have seen them reach the Grand Final.

He is a player that is very much the sort coach Justin Holbrook fancies – young, pacy, creative and dedicated and Richardson has definitely come to the fore of people’s minds over the second half of 2017 and he is a player I am expecting to have a big impact next season and, perhaps, to displace Matty Smith as St Helens’ first choice scrum half.
